It has been an uphill struggle to get a 5 acre homestead for our family on limited budget that allows us to continue needed BAU (jobs, shopping, health care, schools) while doing what we can to prepare for the future. IMO coping with BAU is a necessity. We, all of us, are tightly integrated into our civilization. We are trying to do a co-operative Permaculture community, but it seems everyone who is interested has their favourite "not that" that is non-negotiable.

Some want to build a thousand feet of road and put a house way back in the woods, in contravention to the Permaculture Zone system. Some want to see all our building far from the road, while intellectually agreeing that we don't want to maintain a long road and we want to be close to channels of commerce. Some want cheap, pre-fab housing, rather than the planned labour-intensive but easily maintained and durable natural building. Some are unwilling to undergo any discomfort or sacrifice while building, while "knowing" that a lot of discomfort is coming down the road for those who are not ready.

In my experience, everyone "knows" that civilization as we know it is coming to an end, but nobody wants to make plans for coping with that!

We need thirteen shares at a hundred grand to make this work, but we're lucky if we can maintain two or three. We're trying to hold this space for a new way of being with the Earth, but people who are interested think that "someday" they might do something about it.

Let's hope "someday" comes before doomsday!Jan Steinmanhttp://www.ecoreality.orgnoreply@blogger.com
