This has led to many present problems (alcohol, sport identity over studies, the loss of a shared education, focus on money-making courses, grade inflation, etc.).

At some point, the system will have to crash. The chance for a smooth landing and conversion seems to be finished, and (as always) the cause appears to be an outside source.Donald Hargraveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09344021603569624221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8861605.post-1147107240089329382006-05-08T12:54:00.000-04:002006-05-08T12:54:00.000-04:00Although not always aware of it, Americans have be...Although not always aware of it, Americans have been supporting a vast construction boom on our campuses for years. Each new building has thus become a new source of demand, helping to drive up the price of heating and/or cooling it and all the others.

The net effect is that expansion of campus facilities has built in a cost well beyond construction itself. And that students will end up paying higher tuitions not for higher quality of instruction but instead for a binge of construction.

American homeowners are entering a similar bind. Borrowing to buy bigger homes, many have ended up struggling to meet mortgage payments for homes they could not really afford. Now they won't be able to afford heating them, forcing the current owners to sell. The lurking question is whether this will affect enough American homeowners to create a glut of homes on the market, and a corresponding decline in home prices.

Lance Olsen
Project Director
Cold Mountain, Cold Rivers
Missoula MontanaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
