It...This article is well-written, yet nothing new.<br /><br />It's common knowledge, especially outside the US, that the "American way of life" is unsustainable - this was the case since the 70's for sure.<br /><br />300 million Americans still consume more than 1 billion Indians, so who's more at fault for population overshoot: the poor who have too many children or the person in the developed world who have view children yet has a pet that consumes more (and has a more dignified life) than citizens of many countries?<br /><br />The fact is that the United States is a club, a club wealth excess and consumerism. It is a private club, not open to just anyone. It's hard to get to become a part of this club; for some people literally impossible. This is because the more people that join the club, the shorter the party will last.<br /><br />We Americans are all guilty of this. We consume more than any other people on the planet on a per capita basis. It's not the number of people on the planet that disturb us - what disturbs us is that the American way of life is coming to an end. At last.<br /><br />As for the commenter who wrote "we should bring immigrants who can plant food"... well, when people with those skills do come here they are lost in a society of consumerism where money and credit is what counts. It's not like a person with such skills who happens to immigrate here can easily acquire land and start a farm.
