I would add one more thought. There have been many pandemic diseases and the vectors of their spread as well as the transmission modalities are important. Example : Cholera and Typhoid fever come from contaminated water and that is amenable to relatively easy mitigation strategies. Covid is an exceedingly infectious agent spread primarily by respiratory mechanisms. Crowded urban environments foster the spread and civilizations that have that social structure are especially susceptible. The problem here should be obvious . There are techniques that can reduce spread but in the process they torpedo an economy reliant on this dense urban structure. I wonder if the dense crowded urban model might be doomed at least in the near term and perhaps even in the long term. WE may need fewer large cities with far fewer people within them. I suspect that we could be witnessing the end of the megacity model.sv kohohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11058401490041584973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8861605.post-25663842589581225062020-06-29T11:02:37.318-04:002020-06-29T11:02:37.318-04:00I wouldn't attach too many anthropomorphic cha...I wouldn't attach too many anthropomorphic characteristics to a virus. It's basically a biological robot who's only function is to hijack cells and reproduce. We, mankind, are the target of choice for this Coronavirus. I'm hoping for effective treatments and, perhaps, a vaccine.

Given the latest study from China, COVID-19 antibodies don't persist, so treatments are our long term strategy. Like our "common cold," also a coronavirus, we might get this year after year. Few of us die from colds, so, the level of danger is much higher. As of today, we have about half a million deaths from COVID-19 and unreported numbers of injured.

All that being said, there will be an adjustment to be made. Right before the Pandemic, I was planning a world tour. After, I had to cancel: I wanted to be a tourist not a spreader. If there is no "permanent" immunity possible, how safe would a multi-city tour be to the last few friends on your itinerary? I have a timeshare in Florida. Is it safe to travel there, much less be there? Should I self-quarantine for 14 days when I return?

No, nothing will be the same after this.DBHoustonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06551491924199895584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8861605.post-73270858955221730342020-06-28T13:58:51.365-04:002020-06-28T13:58:51.365-04:00There has been little to smile about in recent mon...There has been little to smile about in recent months, but I have enjoyed watching politicians try to negotiate with the laws of biology.

Some years ago our church was looking for a new rector. We put together the usual search committee and a list of the qualifications that we would like the successful candidate to have. In addition to the usual requirements, I suggested that the candidate have a good grasp of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. People laughed, and said that if we were to insist on that requirement, then we would never find a priest. They were correct, of course. But I was not joking.ChemEnghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05168251215012150114noreply@blogger.com
